Disc golf: Innova’s top 5 DX stamps

DX stamps reign supreme at Innova.

When a run (or two) of a premium-plastic mold is pumped out with the DX design on the flight plate, it’s an instant feeding-frenzy for buyers – third-party sellers can’t wait to scoop ‘em up.

Yeah, there are a few sucky outliers in the mix: The stock DX Birdie and DX Skeeter look like knock-off clipart designs. By and large, though, the majority of DX stamps are works of art …

Put the following five in the Louvre:

1. The DX Orc

Don’t tell me DreamWorks didn’t have a few of these in the studio back in 2001

The thing straight-up looks like an early-stage Shrek.

The Innova Orc: The DX Design

That or something a Dungeons & Dragons-obsessed middle-schooler would doodle at the top of his math homework when bored out of his mind. Regardless of the source of inspiration, the DX Orc is a fierce-looking disc. Nate Sexton might’ve built the Champion Orc a cult following of sorts, but it’s the DX Orc that’s swimming in widespread sex appeal – it’s a yummy frisbee.

2. The DX Colt

You don’t have to be a card-carrying, flannel-rocking NRA activist to get this

That’s a Colt Anaconda .44 Magnum on the flight plate.

The Innova Colt: The DX Design

And to make the thing even more bad-butt, the words “Innova Single Action” are written on the barrel of the pistol – that’s some hardcore artistic detail. The only thing Innova gets wrong with the Colt is switching to some sort of demon-possessed pony on the Star version of the disc …

Gutless.

3. The DX Boss

Much of Innova’s DX artwork offers up a Gothic, Romanesque vibe …

The DX Teebird, DX Firebird and DX Archangel are all proof of it.

The Innova Boss: The DX Design

What gives the DX Boss a comfy spot on this list is its willingness to deviate from Rancho Cucamonga’s beaten creative path. Instead of the inside of a cathedral, you’re given a zoot suit-sporting mafia king ready to gouge out your eyeballs with a broken billiards cue.

I fear the move; I respect the move.

4. The DX Eagle

That whole “feeding-frenzy” thing I mentioned earlier on?

THIS is the stamp buyers are after – they fly off virtual shelves.

The Innova Eagle: The DX Design

Eagle-throwers are a passionate bunch. While you and I might struggle to feel the difference between an Eagle and Teebird, the DX stamps make ‘em easy to tell apart – the Eagle trounces all. The design is fresh, simple and clean – there’s nothing corny about it. Though Innova owns the image, it’s the kind of visual branding you’d expect to see on a North Face jacket …

Quality at its finest.

5. The Classic Aviar

No doubt about it …

This is the best of the best.

The Classic Aviar: The DX Design

If you’re at all new to disc golf or Innova plastic, the Classic Aviar comes only in DX polymers. I have no idea what an “aviar” even is, but the grid-stamp design Innova’s dedicated to this mold is indeed classic. The DX Putt & Approach Aviar is adorned with what appears to be a jockstrap catching a frisbee. Thankfully, the Classic Aviar atones for the aesthetic sins of its fallen brother.

* Honorable Mention: The DX Stud has a horny horse on it – the audacity of it all is brilliant.

Sadly, DX discs often prove to be “one-tree wonders.”

But the stamps are hard to resist.

Well-played, Mr. Dunipace …

Well-played.
