Disc golf: Why flat-top frisbees are best

To each disc golfer his own …

For me, flat-top frisbees reign supreme.

Of course, there are plenty of flight-plate options:

  • In general, domey discs glide for days.
  • Puddle-topped discs are often straight-fliers.
  • Neutral discs make for the best Star Destroyers.
  • Warped discs might look ugly, but they’re loved.

But, man …

It’s hard to beat a flat disc.

For starters, beef.

No, overstable plastic isn’t the be-all and end-all of frisbee flight patterns, but there’s a reason most professionals dawn fade-heavy bags: 1) They’re more reliable, and 2) they’re more workable. When a disc’s meaty, the archer’s in control – other factors are neutralized.

* Note: If you’re an amateur, you probably don’t bag near enough understable stuff, though.

Next, while personal preference differs from golfer to golfer, most agree the in-hand feel of flat-top discs is second to none. With that feel comes an INSTANT increase in confidence. And it’s warranted: Forehand or backhand, pancake-flat discs work wonders for any style of throw.

Still, what I like best about table-top discs is uniformity – there’s no middle-ground. If you’re needing evidence of this, ask any higher-up at OTB to define what “somewhat domey” means, and you’ll get answers all over the place. “Flat-top” means it’s a top – and it’s flat …

Crunch the numbers, Einstein.

I wish there were more, but stock, board-flat molds are a tremendous blessing for disc-buyers. There’s no need to ask for a crap-ton of pictures on Facebook Marketplace. And when sold on eBay, they don’t command ungodly amounts of cash. The Millennium Draco is one of ‘em. The Discmania Mutant is another. Heck, the Sockibomb Slammer is the FLATTEST disc on Earth.

There are loads more, but not enough …

Disc golf will get there.

If any of this seems like a load of hogwash, consider the fact that many Tour Series discs are marketed on the intentionally flat-top nature of their flight plates – like, that’s their main “thing.”

Innova even went as far as creating a “3-series” line of discs to appease the pioneering lover of flat plastic himself, Mr. Paul McBeth. You might not be him, but he knows what works …

And it’s flat.

If you’ve not yet given flat-top discs priority when bag-building, do it.

Disc golfers are obsessed with ‘em for a reason …

They’re king.
