Discraft: What’s Jawbreaker plastic? (and what to expect from it)

I’m big on Discraft’s Jawbreaker plastic.

It’s not for everybody, though …

There’s some good; there’s some bad, too.

Discraft created Jawbreaker plastic to be the best putt-and-approach polymer in the game. To that end, it’s mildly flexible and incredibly tacky-feelingthe grip is unreal. And while the overall feel and flexibility might make it seem like there’s rubber in there somewhere, there’s not.

Naturally, as Discraft’s grippiest plastic, Jawbreaker discs are known for their performance during cold, wet rounds – this is all legit. What’s less legit is the middle-tier-polymer messaging Discraft’s built around the plastic. It’s not that – it’s high-end baseline (oxymoron) at best.

Granted, it’s not a trash run of DX or anything …

I’ve hit countless trees with the Jawbreaker stuff I’ve bagged over the years, and nothing’s shattered. But again, it’s nowhere near a premium polymer. For example, if you bought a new Jawbreaker Zone for a wooded tournament, come Sunday afternoon, the mega-beef is gone.

BUT

After its initial beating, it holds its stability.

Such is the trajectory of a Jawbreaker disc.

The Discraft Banger-GT: Jawbreaker Plastic

I don’t putt with a Discraft putter, but if you do, go Jawbreaker. Unlike the KC Pro Aviars I bag, Jawbreaker putters are great for year-round use. In fact, most of Discraft’s popular putters are available in Jawbreaker plastic: the Luna, Focus, Roach, Magnet, Challenger, Banger-GT, etc.

Here’s what I see as the HIDDEN value of Jawbreaker plastic, though …

Beyond circle-one work, if you lean heavily on one mold in a more premium Discraft plastic, complement it with the same mold – but in Jawbreaker form. Remember that “Jawbreaker Zone” I mentioned earlier on? Instead of buying a premium-plastic Ringer or Breaker, purchase a Jawbreaker Zone. Also, though tougher to find, the Buzzz and Scorch work well for this, too.

The Discraft Zone: Jawbreaker Plastic

You’ve heard it before …

You’ll hear it again:

One Mold + Multiple Flights = Más Consistency

Lastly, though it doesn’t amount to much, it’s hard to blog about Jawbreaker plastic without talking about how it looks. The marbled outfit is one-of-a-kind – no two discs are the same.

Jawbreaker discs feel great and look great – when putting, that’s good enough. For anything faster, though, as long as you’re fine with a less overstable flight path, it’ll deliver …

Otherwise, look elsewhere.
