Discraft: Where does the ‘Get Freaky’ name come from?

Ten years ago, I knew Jack-diddly about Discraft

After Paul McBeth made the jump from Innova, I became well-versed.

Something I didn’t know for the longest time, though?

Where the whole “Get Freaky” name came from. Was it Jim Kenner’s marketing genius? Or, was it some sort of dirty, random euphemism pulled from the confines of Brodie Smith’s inner circle?

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, “Get Freaky” is the name used to refer to Discraft’s stock CryZtal FLX Zone. It’s a Z-Line Zone, but it’s gummy. With a glossy finish and Smith’s Darkhorse design on the flight plate, it’s better-looking, too. Given the frisbee is one of disc golf’s highest-use approach putters, the bendability it offers by the basket is BIG

  • Step No. 1 – Hit.
  • Step No. 2 – Stick.
  • Step No. 3 – Repeat.

To piece this article together, as he works closely with Broderick, I reached out to Foundation Disc Golf’s Hunter Thomas – he didn’t know the origins of the name. That led to me sliding into Brodie’s DMs on Twitter. He directed me to one of the first disc golf videos he ever made …

It was the initial episode of a two-part series with Paul McBeth at the Discraft warehouse. In it, the pair talk about polymers, disc types and the basics of bag-building. Three (short) years later, with Brodie now a legit, 1025-rated professional, it’s nutty to see him learning the ropes.

The first time he felt a Zone?

Here’s how that went down …

  • Paul: “That one’s unique …”
  • Brodie: “I feel like overstable are the ones that are almost like the technical – like, you can get real freaky with these.
  • Paul: “Yeah, you can throw flex shots, you can throw straight hyzers, you can throw over stuff. Backhand, forehand – all sorts of stuff.”
  • Brodie: “Oh, my gosh – yeah. It gets freaky, guys.”

So there you have it …

The name stems from Brodie’s initial reaction to feeling (and learning about) the Zone. New to the sport, he liked the description – it made sense. Discraft also liked it, so they ran with it.

If you’ve ever bagged a Zone, you know it’s capable of just that – getting freaky.

Save this seemingly useless information for a later date …

Maybe it’ll make an appearance on “Jeopardy” one day.
