The Discraft Zone might be disc golf’s most versatile disc

I don’t drink, but I know enough about the scene to know what makes for a good game. If you’re looking to get plastered today, toss back a shot every time Aaron Gossage reaches for his Zone.

My bag’s not brand-specific, but most of my molds come from the Innova lineup. There’s some DGA in there. You’ll find a few Discraft discs. And it doesn’t get any better than the Millennium Scorpius. Innova was what was most readily available when I first discovered disc golf

I’m a creature of habit.

As such, to cover Zone-like lines, I’ve always used a flat-top Champion Glow Gator – the Gator3 will get the job done, too. Lately, however, I’ve switched to the Star Croc, as it’s a touch faster. With less effort, I can get it out farther. My wimpy forehand needs all the help it can get.

I’ve tinkered with the Zone, but again …

CREATURE. OF. HABIT.

After watching Gossage dominate three rounds of play with it at Worlds, though, it might be time to dust off the Big-Z FLX Zone in my basement. You know, so I can do the things he does – minus a couple-hundred feet, of course. Seriously, the guy does everything but eat off of it

Both forehand and backhand:

  • Shot Shape No. 1 – The Zone is ideal for spike-hyzer lines.
  • Shot Shape No. 2 – The Zone is great for tossing gentle flexes.
  • Shot Shape No. 3 – The Zone is perfect for short, subtle turnovers.
  • Shot Shape No. 4 – The Zone is awesome for straight shots that dump.

And if you’re looking for a more neutral flight out of your Zone, I’ve got buddies who swear by Jawbreaker plastic. Throw it. Beat it. Before long, it’ll achieve more stable-to-overstable lines. You’ll also get more glide out of it, too. For a dink-and-die disc like the Zone, that’s cool.

ANY weight. ANY plastic. And from just about ANY retailer, too.

DGPT: Adam Hammes

Here’s what I think makes the Zone such a versatile mold, though …

The disc’s in-hand feel is arguably one of the best in the game. It’s beadless – most people prefer that. But on top of it, it’s got an incredibly low profile. So low, in fact, disc golfers argue over whether it’s a putter or midrange. Therein lies the beauty of the putter-midrange hybrid

It’ll kick a few molds to the curb.

And though it’s a hefty stretch for the more amateur amongst us, if you’re Gossage, the Zone creeps into fairway-driver territory, as well. Without exaggeration, he’s able to get close to 400 feet (or more) out of his, assuming the fairway’s ceiling is either sky-high or non-existent.

You’re not Aaron Gossage. Or Ben Callaway. Or Paul Ulibarri. Or Andrew Presnell. Or Ezra Aderhold. Or Brodie Smith. Or Adam Hammes. Or Chris Dickerson. Or Paul McBeth.

You know, ALL players who lean heavily on the Discraft Zone

See what I mean?

It’s hard to argue with successthe Zone can help you find it.
