Gripe No. 41: Disc golfers who can’t keep score in their heads

I get that UDisc is a thing. And I know some old-timers carry a reusable scorecard around with ‘em. But during a normal, casual round, NONE of that should be necessary to simply keep score.

The greatest sign of the “old soul” within me is my complete and utter disdain for technology on the course. Outside of a tournament, when I disc golf, I want to sever ties with all symbols of the outside world. My smartphone stays in the car. My earbuds stay in the desk drawer. My portable speaker stays in the garage. And my rangefinder would stay in my tourney bag, if I had one …

Hard pass.

As someone who prefers casual-round company to attacking a course alone, I never insist others do the same – that they embrace my more Amish approach to the game. But when they do, and the result is an incessant peppering of the following inquiries, color me (hardcore) chapped:

  • “Dude, do you know what score I’m at?”
  • “Wait, what did I even take on that last hole?”
  • “What’s your score? I think I’m [#] strokes back of you.”

Come on, man …

I’m no Pythagoras, but this is hardly abstract algebra.

DGPT: The 2023 LWS Open at Idlewild

Add one or two. Threes happen, but they’re rare. From time to time, subtract one. Subtract two, if you’ve done something worthy of ESPN. And when things get intense, do nothingpar golf. It can’t be MY job to make a mental note of how well you’re shooting on any given day.

But here’s what’s interesting …

So mind-numbingly simple is this task that – with ZERO mental effort on my part, mind you – I almost always know the answers to each of the above questions. And I hate myself for it.

It feeds the beast that is comatose scorekeeping.

Yes, it’s just a for-funzies round …

But you’re a big boy.

Keep your own score like one.

  1. I don’t keep anyone else’s score, but I keep mine on UDisc. I use UDisc for the layout as much as the score. It is a nice way to keep a record of scores to see how I have done over time. What did you score there three months ago? Old timers that keep a record know.

  2. Since 99% of my rounds are during work when i sneak away, always got the phone on vibrate in the pocket to answer those Microsoft Teams chats but…. I enter my udisc scores in the parking lot after my round. Price hike sucked.

  3. I’m with you! If you only count your birdies/bogeys, it’s lemon squeezy. If you’re ever near Philadelphia, go really old school at the second ever built course. I’ll be ready!

  4. Wow, what a crappy take for a sport that’s supposed to be chill and fun. If we want to use UDisc on every single round, so what. Get off your high horse and quite judging others for doing what we want…something that doesn’t effect you a single bit.

You do you and we’ll do us.

  5. Yes, I for one am dine and dandy with it. It’s one of the most highly used apps on my phone, they do a wonderful job of updating and enhancing the app and they deserved to get paid for the time and effort.

  6. For me I’m on the fence on U disc. I do use it although mainly for the measure throw feature and just to look at stats. However I find it easier to keep score in my head. Trying to update scores in the blaring Georgia Sun it’s almost impossible as you can’t really read the screen. Also especially with multiple players it flips the scorecard based on winner of last hole and if you’re not expecting it it’s easy to enter scores incorrectly. Definitely did not like the price increase. I’m seriously considering not re-upping in December

    • Yeah, totally get it …

Yes, there are plenty of “bells and whistles,” but if you’re just using it to keep score, it’s not worth it – at all.
