Gripe No. 33: ‘Let’s go!’ as disc golf’s go-to ace declaration

This isn’t just a disc golf thing …

No matter the sport, whenever something out-of-this-world awesome happens, this phrase inevitably makes its way into nearby microphones – it’s unavoidable at this point.

The standard instigators:

  • Hat tricks.
  • Hail Marys.
  • Half-court heaves.

Disc golf’s version of the above is a hole-in-one, timely throw-in or clutch putt. Never far behind is the cookie-cutter saying both athletes and fans can’t help but belch out of their face holes:

“Let’s go!”

It’s a knee-jerk reaction – something ingrained deep within the human psyche.

There’s no NOT saying it.

Take, for example, the following ace from the Pro Tour’s sweetheart, Nikko Locastro:

In the span of 61 measly seconds, the remark makes its way into the excited aftermath a grand total of five times – each courtesy of Mr. Locastro. And that’s all this single YouTube clip has to offer. Undoubtedly, the expression – along with some empowering, off-camera expletives – made a few more appearances en route to Nikko retrieving his distance driver from the basket.

What I want to know, however, is how this ONE phrase became the go-to utterance for adrenaline-inundated disc golfers. At its core, it makes sense: Even in an individual sport like disc golf, with fans and cardmates nearby, the achievement almost feels communal. As such, a well-timed, “Let’s go!” serves as a symbolic rallying of the troops – a way to share the joy.

It’s the overuse of it that drives me batty.

I may not be the most creative of writers, but I do go out of my way to at least try and express similar ideas in different ways. I dedicated about 30 seconds to these – try ‘em on for size …

See if one sticks:

  • Idea No. 1 – “Bang.”
  • Idea No. 2 – “Easy as pie.”
  • Idea No. 3 – “Never a doubt.”
  • Idea No. 4 – “No autographs, please.”
  • Idea No. 5 – “Boom goes the dynamite.”

Or my personal favorite, complete silence in the face of lone greatness.

Remember this gem of a one-shot wonder?

The reaction is unforgettable.

Both inside and outside of disc golf – for English-speaking athletes, at least – this ever-present slogan doesn’t appear to be dying out anytime soon. Be the change you want to see in the sport.

Find an alternative. Then, use it religiously.

Thanks in advance.

  1. I’d say you must be pretty desperate if you have to get all riled up about this. Seems insignificant to me.
