Innova: Take a look at the 2023 Star Destroyer

Innova’s Star Destroyer is arguably disc golf’s most iconic frisbee.

There’s a good chance you’re familiar with it:

  • If you’re good, you bag one.
  • If you want to be good, you bag one.
  • If you suck beyond belief, you bag one, too.

In other words, you (likely) bag one.

And not just any Destroyer, either …

The DX, Pro and GStar Destroyers might bomb, but the shelf life on that “bomb” status isn’t long. And Champion or Metal Flake Destroyers serve up sizable portions of beef, but the overstability sticks around for the long haul – not a bad thing, but the use is more niche.

DGPT: James Proctor

The Star Destroyer is the IDEAL combination of the two. It’s got teeth, but given time, you’ll discover a sizable uptick in turn and glideand distance. Because of the disc’s widespread workability, the Star Destroyer is joined at the hip with Rancho Cucamonga’s greats …

Approved by the PDGA in 2007, the stock Star Destroyer was without a “signature” for two years. After Avery Jenkins won Worlds in 2009, his name graced the Star Destroyer’s flight plate through 2015. From 2016 to 2018, Paul McBeth claimed the precious real estate as his own. And with McBeast’s unexpected departure, Ricky Wysocki took up residence from 2019 to 2021.

Last season, the Star Destroyer was back to its “meh” self – nothing unique.

But what about 2023?

Chickity-check fo’ yo’ self …

Similar to what we saw with Rick’s Destroyer, the 2023 version of the disc is back to a full-flight plate design. The featured robot is slightly different from the one found on the DX Destroyer. It’s also super reminiscent of the machine present on Philo Brathwaite’s Tour Series Star Destroyers. Innova’s new bar-ish logo makes an appearance, as well – I’m not in love with it, to be honest.

Still, in the post-signature era, it’s the best-looking Star Destroyer Innova’s offered …

It’s not competing with much, though.

The real question is who on Team Innova – if anybody – will earn the right to the royalty checks generated by Star-Destroyer sales? If a World Title is required, Gregg Barsby is the only guy in the running. Nate Sexton, Jeremy Koling and Hailey King all own a single major title …

But history (see above) says that’s not enough.

DGPT: Calvin Heimburg

With Barsby best-known for throwing the Scorpius, he seems like an outside candidate. Should Calvin Heimburg ever take down a World Championship, he’s a quality contender. But given the mass popularity of the disc, my best bet is that Innova keeps the Star Destroyer for itself …

It doesn’t need any help moving it.

Do you absolutely need the 2023 version of this thing?

Probably not, but it’s hard to go wrong with a Star Destroyer.

If you’ve not yet boarded Innova’s biggest bandwagon, 2023 isn’t a bad time to do it.

    • Not sure that’s entirely possible …

The PDGA approved it for use on June 26, 2007.

Did you get your hands on a proto or something?

If so, that thing could be worth some serious coin, assuming you still have it 🙂

    • He’s had the HALO Destroyer …

Or one of ’em, at least – you can buy the disc without it being his “Tour Series” disc, as well.

Instead, it just says “Destroyer” across the flight plate.

This article is talking about the STOCK Destroyer.
