Should you buy the Paige Pierce documentary? (Spoiler: I’ve seen it)

I’ve never reviewed a movie in my life.

To be honest, I don’t watch many of ‘em – I have the attention span of a baby elephant.

In my lifetime, however, I’ve seen two disc golf documentaries:

  • Disc Golf Doc. No. 1 – JomezPro’s “An Eagle’s Trail
  • Disc Golf Doc. No. 2 – The Disc Golf Pro Tour’s “Fierce

I thought the first one was a snoozefest.

I’m certain JomezPro was working with a limited budget, but it was clear storytelling isn’t their forte – that’s post-produced disc golf. For a short film, the narrative was far too slow-moving. And yeah, there was an emotional element present, but I couldn’t ever connect with it

That’s probably on me.

Anyway, if you thought THAT was good, “Fierce” is going to blow your mother-freaking mind out of the water. I went in with woefully low expectations – here’s what I figured I’d find:

  • A crisp, professional-looking documentary.
  • A gosh-awful, 850-rated storyboard.
  • A watered-down puff piece.

Here’s what I got:

  • A crisp, professional-looking documentary – no surprises there.
  • A gripping story that ventures WAY beyond disc golf.
  • A raw, drama-packed feature – ish gets real.

Fierce” follows Paige Pierce’s journey throughout the 2021 disc golf season. The story is told through the lens of Pierce’s obsession with taking down the 2021 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships. In Pierce’s eyes, this feat would solidify her as the greatest FPO disc golfer in the sport’s history. At the time, no FPO golfer had reached six world titles …

DGPT: Catrina Allen

Spoiler Alert: One year later, that’s STILL the case.

As I see it, the first 15 minutes of the 107-minute documentary are a bit sluggish. This is understandable, as the intended audience isn’t strictly a bunch of plastic junkies. During that time, complete strangers of our sport are brought up to speed on what disc golf is all about …

After that, the intensity extends WELL beyond the impending doom of Ogden, Utah:

  • Battle No. 1 – Pierce vs. Pierce
  • Battle No. 2 – Pierce vs. Prejudice
  • Battle No. 3 – Pierce vs. Papa Pierce
  • Battle No. 4 – Pierce vs. Expectations
  • Battle No. 5 – Pierce vs. Catrina Allen

Also, I DIDN’T expect this …

The PDGA and Innova are clear-cut villains in this thing.

Tears. F-bombs. Paige blowing up on camera crews.

I work in disc golf media. Never have I seen anything like this – this is new.

So yes, you should buy it.

Tickets are already on sale. If you’re not a current Disc Golf Network subscriber, access will set you back $11.99 – not too shabby. If you are, check your inbox for a promo code (50% off) from the DGN.

Can’t find it?

Take a deep breath and email [email protected] – they’ll send it your way ASAP. Also, one final word to the wise: The promo code must be used on a computer – not an app or smart TV.

Ticket sales will run through Sunday, Sept. 4 – the day after the conclusion of the 2022 PDGA World Championships. And no worries: Should you purchase a “Fierce” ticket, via the DGN platform, you’ll have access to the film in perpetuity – that’s legal speak for “forever.”
