I regularly get asked this question …
It’s time I put forth a proper answer:
“Where does the ‘Green Splatter’ name come from?”
The truth is by no means interesting, but still …
I’m happy to share.
I’m not a full-time blogger. Fresh out of college, I started a PR agency. That might sound sexy, but most of my days are spent sending emails and talking on the phone. I’m also writing like a madman: texts, emails, pitches, storyboards, project briefs, article drafts, press releases, etc.
Anyway, within the PR industry, as silly as it sounds, today’s “business card” is largely viewed as being the founding editor of your own publication – you see versions of this all over the place.
For example, these days, many C-suite executives publish books to highlight their knowledge. It’s a play for clout. Business cards, publications, authorship – it doesn’t matter: You want people to know you know what you’re talking about, so they’ll pay you to do (expensive) stuff for them.
So, back in 2017, under the direction of a PR mentor of mine, I set out to found a publication of my own. To that end, I purchased the “Green Splatter” domain. I even paid a guy to mock-up some logos. The site was meant to speak to aspiring writers about how to make a part- or full-time living off their craft. I was doing it in PR, so I figured I’d help others do it, too.
Here’s a breakdown of the name: The “Green” part was a reference to income – cash. The “Splatter” part was a reference to being inundated with something – again, cash-money.
Think Nickelodeon and “Slime Time Live,” if you need a visual. In hindsight, the name was perhaps a bit too outside-the-box with the branding, but these are hardly things to obsess over, so I ran with it. Anyway, care to know how many articles I published using my original idea?
Zero.
Life got in the way.
I wasn’t passionate enough about it.
Essentially, I quit – and before even starting.
Fast forward to 2021, and the blogging bug was back. Only this time, I didn’t want to write about what I thought might interest people – I wanted to write about what I knew would interest me …
Disc golf.
The driving force behind my writing had changed, as potential PR clients wouldn’t give a rat’s rectum about disc golf, but I didn’t care. If I was going to avoid giving up before hitting the “publish” button a single time, I’d need a drastically new direction – onwards and upwards.
I hate to say it, but the “Green Splatter” name has literally ZERO to do with disc golf. I owned the domain. I already had a logo, as well. Too lazy to start over with the whole branding journey and anxious to actually start writing and publishing words, I ran with it. And low and behold …
Green Splatter was born.
Green trees, green discs – even putting greens. It’s all green and at least semi-related to disc golf. The truth of the matter, though? None of it has anything to do with the Green Splatter name.
Lame, I know.
But it’s all I’ve got.
I’m at peace with it.

Editor’s Suggestions:
- Suck at disc golf? Be the guy with a great attitude
- Gripe No. 71: Wet socks as a result of a disc-retrieval
- Pop a chill-pill: Other people can touch your golf discs

Lucas, Thanks for sharing. I always thought of Green Splatter like a hyzer spike to the putting “green”. But I’ve always been curious what you do when you aren’t blogging along. I’m sure running a PR agency sounds much more interesting than it is! Well I for one am glad you started this endeavor. I love your disc reviews, hot takes and tips. This blog gave me the push to play my first tournaments. Keep the blogs coming and I promise to keep showing up. I may not comment on every single blog post, but I promise they’re being read, brother!
Thanks, Kurt!
Oh, by no means do you need to comment on every article …
Read what you like. Don’t read what you don’t.
Comment when you want to, and if you don’t want to, not an issue 🙂
The older I get, the more old-fashioned I become …
Blogging is part of that, I suppose. Haha.
Appreciate the support!
Cool story. I’m still gonna believe you were a professional paintball blogger. Makes more sense.
Nobody would read a PR Blog! Right?
You’d be surprised …
There are TONS of ’em.
So people are reading them.
As to whether the people writing them actually enjoy creating content, I can’t speak to that …
It seems like it might be a bit boring. Haha.
(and for the record, I’ve only been paint-balling once – it was fun, but pricey)
Lucas,
No matter how it all started or the name with no relative connection to disc golf…that is the great part that makes this blog iconic. I’ve learned, I’ve got better, my mental game is stronger. Thanks for your time in writing, thanks to your wife and kids in allowing you this opportunity to share with me so that I can be entertained and taught some of the nuances of this sport. I just consider GREEN SPLATTER to be a part of my day, with much appreciation, thanks!!!
Thanks for the love, Boomer!
Much appreciated, brotha!
BTW, I know I’ve said this before …
But I can’t read your name without chanting “Sooner” to myself …
Never change. Haha.
I’m with Boomer. Green Splatter has crept into my daily routine. Always enjoy seeing a new article each afternoon.
Thanks, Kurt!
