What to look for in a ‘one-disc-round’ frisbee

During the DGPT’s off-season, things get weird …

For starters, it’s cold outside – that’s different. And with the days getting painfully short, glow golf becomes more of a mainstay of many amateur rounds. I prefer sunlit play to darkness, but will indulge should the fancy strike me. To further mix things up, I’ll go the one-disc route, too.

They’re great for writing reviews – not bad for a blogger. I also enjoy them for fine-tuning a mold I can’t seem to get right during regular rounds. And perhaps best of all, one-disc rounds eliminate the production of hauling 15-plus discs out to the course like some sort of pack mule.

One disc. Zero decisions. Absolute fun.

But how do you choose THE disc you’ll bring along for the ride?

Easy …

First, it needs to fly for you – it’s got to get off the tee a bit. No, one-disc play needn’t turn into a distance competition, but try attacking a 450-foot hole with a K1 Soft Berg. I don’t care how much you love the cult-hero classic, if it’s the only arrow in your quiver, it’s frustrating.

Second, go with something you can grip a number of ways – forehand and backhand. By so doing, you’re able to not only get off the tee with it, but can approach a basket, as well. This might not seem like a big deal, but remember: You’ve left your loaded ZÜCA cart at home.

Third, you’ve got to be able to putt with the thing – to some degree, at least. If I could attack every one-disc round with nothing but a Big-Z Scorch, I would – it just doesn’t work, though. Unless you’re a freak of putting form, this usually means putters and midranges get the nod.

* Bonus: If it glows, even better. Don’t limit your one-disc adventures to daytime hours.

I can jabber all I like, but what does this actually look like for me?

The following are a few of my one-disc favorites:

* Note: It’s often nice to make it a two-disc round – bring your putting putter along, guilt-free.

Bored out of your mind this off-season? Yeah, you can give Ript Revenge a whirl …

But if you’ve already bailed on your DGPT subscription, mix it up with a few one-disc rounds.
