YouTube’s most underrated disc golf channel

Disc golf and YouTube go well together.

The sport’s not regularly featured on cable or network television. As such, YouTube is a natural solution to the dilemma. There are tons of quality disc golf channels on the platform, thankfully.

The Holy Trinity of them is as follows:

  • Jomez Productions
  • The Disc Golf Pro Tour

That third slot is still vacant.

Did you notice?

It’s up for grabs.

Five years ago, it would’ve been occupied by Central Coast Disc Golf. However, with Ian Anderson now a regular in the Disc Golf Network booth and the Central Coast boys spending the bulk of their working hours running errands for Jeff Spring, the channel’s a shell of what it once was. To date, Central Coast continues to publish solid stuff, but the channel’s “flavor” is bland.

As far as that third and final bullet (see above) is concerned, there are multiple candidates in the running. And no, it needn’t offer live or post-produced tournament coverage of any kind. For example, touring pros have upped their YouTube game in recent years: Brodie Smith, Drew Gibson and Simon Lizotte lead the way as some of the game’s leading voices on YouTube.

DGPT: Ricky Wysocki

Instructional content has always struck a chord with YouTube viewers, too. Though having nothing to do with professional disc golfers, Slingshot, Robbie C. and Overthrow have helped simplify the game for thousands of disc golfers. Then, of course, you have channels dedicated more to miscellaneous, challenge-based content: Swanky, Bodanza and Foundation Disc Golf.

And a bunch of other channels, too.

They’re all good.

None of them are claiming the third spot on my personal podium, though. For me, that precious real estate belongs to none other than YouTube’s most heavily underrated disc golf channel …

SmallBoreOutlaw.

YouTube: SmallBoreOutlaw Disc Golf

Ever heard of it?

SmallBoreOutlaw specializes in clip compilations:

  • The wild.
  • The weird.
  • The wacky.

SmallBoreOutlaw has been around since 2019. At the time of the publishing of this article, the channel’s just shy of 25,000 subscribers. So yes, SmallBoreOutlaw is a known media entity for those who hardcore follow disc golf, but it’s not known nearly well enough for what it does.

Naysayers will complain about the “faceless” nature of the channel, as well as the fact that its videos are comprised entirely of other people’s content – that everything’s “stolen.” However, take a closer look at what’s going on here, and you’ll see that the workload is absolute insanity.

Seriously, set aside the hours of editing that go into this ish. Instead, focus on the resurrection of random disc golf content that’s well over a decade old. Digging through (literally) thousands of hours of ancient YouTube videos to put together 200-plus compilations is mind-numbing labor.

And when I say “random,” I mean it:

  • European coverage.
  • B- and C-tier events.
  • Smartphone footage.
  • No-name disc golfers.

If you struggle to find the time to watch final-round coverage of most PDGA Majors during the season, hunting for hidden gems amidst a sea of garbage disc golf videos is enough to make you sick in the head. The videos are short; the videos are hyper-specific in what they feature, too.

Here’s one on disc golf’s most memorable foot faults:

Here’s one on Nikko Locastro’s finest, most futile meltdowns:

And here’s the channel’s latest on the game’s greatest conspiracy theories:

* Note: For the record, I hate the AI-generated voiceover work, but the content’s good.

Who else is producing THIS kind of disc golf content on YouTube?

Nobody.

SmallBoreOutlaw zigs, while others zag. I can accept that the channel might not be for everyone, so if that’s you, no worries – my feelings won’t be hurt. And honestly, because of that reality, instantly granting SmallBoreOutlaw “Trinity” status might be a bit of a reach on my part …

But for punchy videos that keep the history of disc golf alive, go with SmallBoreOutlaw.

Weird name. Cool content.

It doesn’t get better than that.

  1. Taylor you might be onto something with this one! SBO is definitely underrated while having the best compilations on YT for disc golf. I agree that a face/real voice would help entice new subscribers but somehow I love the fact that his channel is 100% unadulterated disc golf content…..no merch push, no IMO, no click bait. It is what it is and what it is is fabulous!

    • Taylor actually turned me onto SBO forever ago …

      Love it, as well.

Didn’t even think about the lack of sponsors and all that jazz …

      All good points.

  2. Nikko throwing his chair on the ground and then proceeding to drop all his discs. 🤣

SBO really does have some intersting content. I have been hooked for a while on their videos and also Disc Golf Content.

I agree that this channel should be number 3 and have more subscribers.

  3. I’ll admit I’d never really watched their stuff because the titles seemed kind of click-baity with all the lists and things, but I might have to give them another look. Plus it’s hard not to give them props for all the video clip digging they do. Really impressive!

I like seeing the occasional channel that goes out and does course reviews of sorts while playing as well. It really shows people the “smaller” (aka non-pro) courses that they can find in their area. Tossing Plastic Disc Golf does a great job with this. Not that I needed any other courses on my wish list that aren’t anywhere near where I live, but maybe I’ll get to them eventually!

Thanks as always for the content, it’s always fun to read!

And never heard of Tossing Plastic Disc Golf …

      Gotta check those guys out.

      Appreciate the tip.

Worth a looksie, if you’re looking for something new …

Like Taylor said, though, probably not for everyone.

      I think it’s a good time.

  4. Ace Run is 3 for me. Met those 2, and only 2 guys at OTB in Stockton. Super cool dudes that cover chase and FPO. Blows me away what they get done with only… again… 2 very cool people.

  5. Thank you A.Cook. This is Felix of Ace Run Pro. We owe a lot to Gatekeeper Media for helping us in the beginning of our journey and helping to show us how a 2 man team can still get next day coverage accomplished. We appreciate the shout-out bud!
