The ‘Classic Stamp’ Star Destroyer is back in stock at Innova East

The Star Destroyer is a must-have disc.

Those who wish they had arms that could throw one, bag it anyway. And those who do have big enough arms for one make absolute magic happen with it out on the disc golf course. The original, stable-to-overstable 12–speed, the Star Destroyer is worthy of its reputation.

But while performance has never been much of an issue for the Star Destroyer, recently, the overall look of the stock version of the disc has taken a hit – and a massive one, at that.

DGPT: Calvin Heimburg

The Destroyer mold was approved by the PDGA for sanctioned tournament use in 2007. From 2007 to 2009, it was simply your standard, stock-looking Star disc within the Innova lineup.

From 2009 to 2018, it was more of the same, but with the signatures of Avery Jenkins and Paul McBeth on the flight plate. More specifically, Jenkins’ from 2009 to 2015 and McBeth’s from 2016 to 2018. Upon Paul unexpectedly leaving Innova for Discraft after the 2018 season, the popular, traditional design of the stock Star Destroyer took a sudden turn for the worse.

For a brief spell, the disc had Ricky Wysocki’s autograph – nothing more. Then, for the first time ever, the disc was given the DX treatment with Wysocki’s Raptor Legs and Sockibot stamps. Yes, Rick’s signature was on all three, and a purchase meant supporting the dude’s touring efforts, but the aesthetic of the frisbees was too Saturday-morning-cartoons for my taste.

At the end of the 2021 season, Rick left the West Coast for Emporia to join Team Dynamic Discs. Between then and now, the design of the Star Destroyer has largely been in limbo with sales consisting of leftover, Rick-inspired Destroyers and THIS monstrosity for the 2023 season:

There’s good news, though …

Innova East has a number of Classic Stamp Star Destroyers in stock.

After seeing these things on the Disc Golf United website, I emailed a contact of mine in Rock Hill to find out if this was a permanent change to the stock Star Destroyer. Sadly, it’s not …

Yet.

Apparently, a few dozen were found collecting dust in a remote corner of the warehouse. Naturally, they threw ‘em up on the site to see the response. However, according to Jeff Panis, Dave Dunipace is strongly considering offering both the gaudy and Classic Stamp versions.

My favorite part of all this?

The stock Star Destroyer’s stamp has (finally) come full circle: Sans signature, the driver’s back to where it was in 2007. This time, my only hope is that it’ll stick around for the long haul.

Let the DX Destroyer flaunt its pomp.

The Star Destroyer, though?

Crisp. Clean. Classy.

This is the look most befitting of the game’s single-greatest disc.

  1. Cold Take: Innova makes wonderful molds but their artists are complete trash.

Hot Take: The Innova Star Dominator is better than the Star Destroyer.

  2. For me the classic stamp from Innova is my favorite stamp in all of this golf. Clean and classy. Don’t know what they’re thinking with these god-awful infused stamps. Don’t need cartoon characters on my discs. Although at least they’re not named after food
