The DGPT Championship announces record-shattering pro purse

Similar to last season, the 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) Championship will be presented by Barbasol. Dissimilar, however, the pro purse will be the highest-ever in pro disc golf history.

Thanks in large part to the DGPT’s expanded partnership with Barbasol, each of the 52 disc golfers who qualify for the DGPT Championship will receive a portion of the $322,000 purse. Their season-long points totals brought them to Charlotte – they deserve to be rewarded for it.

From that same purse, the MPO and FPO winners will BOTH (that’s right) receive $40,000.

And on one of those comically big checks, too.

Of the historic dollar amount, says DGPT Tour Director and CEO, Jeff Spring:

“Breaking new ground with this record-setting purse is a testament to the rapid growth and potential of professional disc golf. With the unwavering support of all of our partners, we're not just elevating the game for elite players, but also setting the stage for the future of the sport.”

Continues Spring:

“The DGPT Championship is about celebrating the talent of our athletes and transmitting the story of professional disc golf as an engaging, high-quality experience that inspires and grows fans of the sport, both on-site and online. As we reach these milestones, we're steadfast in our journey to take disc golf to new horizons and express our deepest gratitude to everyone who believes in and supports this game.”

En route to taking home the top prize, the game’s best will compete in a new format. Stroke play remains the guiding method, but with a two-category approach to the 2023 iteration of the event. There are two semi-final rounds, as well as two final rounds – four rounds in total.

Gone are the days of byes to later rounds for top seeds. Instead, the best will receive starting-stroke advantages, based on their post-MVP Open DGPT points standings.

For the MPO field, they look like this:

DGPT: MPO, Starting-Stroke Advantages (2023 DGPT Championship)

And for the FPO division, they’ll differ slightly:

DGPT: FPO, Starting-Stroke Advantages (2023 DGPT Championship)

After two rounds of heated, semi-final play, the top-12 MPO and top-8 FPO golfers advance to the final two rounds. For rounds three and four, ALL starting-stroke advantages are removed from both divisions, meaning everyone starts on a level playing field. From there, regular, run-of-the-mill stroke play will determine the DGPT Championship’s eventual victors.

And again, $40,000 in top-step earnings …

Not bad for a day’s work.

The DGPT Championship will begin Thursday, Oct. 12 at the newly upgraded Nevin Park in Charlotte, N.C. Disc Golf Network (DGN) subscribers can live-stream all four rounds of action on the DGN. For in-person viewing, any necessary ticketing information can be found here.
