Disc golf commentary: Dial back the Matty-O football references

It’s not my place to criticize disc golf commentary

Twitter checks that box over and over (and over) again.

And if you think Terry Miller hasn’t noticed, click here.

I do have one tiny request, though …

Take the current amount of Matthew Orum football references given during a regular broadcast. Then, armed with that number, grab a figurative machete and hack away a solid 75% of ‘em …

It’s all fat.

No, the Disc Golf Network isn’t solely responsible for this …

Matty-O is arguably the single-most likable disc golfer on tour. The guy’s thick, Southern accent is strong enough to bend barbed wire. He might be the one dude to regularly rock a puka-shell necklace since 2005. Inexplicably, he bleaches only the upper half of his head. And to top it all off, he’s rarely found without a smile that makes you think he’s about to tell a dirty joke …

He’s ALSO one of the most consistent disc golfers in the world.

In 2022, Orum finished within the top 10 in 24 out of the 29 sanctioned tournaments in which he played – and those weren’t kiddie-level events, either. Through the first two Pro Tour gigs of this year, it’s been more of the same. Yes, he might forever be the bride’s maid in the winner’s circle, but he’s been at this whole “professional disc golfer” thing since 2003 – that’s two decades.

Talk about longevity …

Back to football.

Matty-O’s from Creole, Alabama. Much like the rest of “The Heart of Dixie,” he practically prays to Nick Saban before bed each night. His passion for the Crimson Tide follows him out onto the course. Off the tee, should he land his disc smack-dab in the middle of the fairway, you’ll see him signal a first down conversion. He’ll also wear a Paul “Bear” Bryant fedora.

Alabama football is his trademark.

Still, though …

It’s a song and dance with which we’re familiar. If he wants to flaunt his Bama fandom, be my guest: He’s earned the right. But when commentators gush over it like it’s new information, it grows tiring. I’d compare it to Patriots announcers proudly reminding at-home viewers Tom Brady was drafted with the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft five times a game …

For 23 years.

We get it.

To the disc golf commentators of the world, let Matty-O be his quirky self out on the course. But with respect to college football, don’t be afraid to look the other way on it. I’ll spot you three, four – even five references to the pigskin. But I’ve only got so many half-laughs in me …

Find some new material.

  1. Matty o is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. If you don’t like Matty o there’s something wrong with you. As a Clemson fan ! It’s cool to say roll tide to Matty o. He always has a smile and replies roll Tide back to you! It’s no different than saying good luck today. It’s definitely his trademark in the disc golf world. Did I mention he’s one of the best players on the planet! Just my opinion Mr new world.
