Disc golf news: With Latitude 64 onboard, it’s time for the Kastaplast Berg to put up or shut up

By now, you’ve heard the news: Latitude 64 has partnered with Kastaplast as co-owner of the Stockholm-based manufacturer. Kastaplast first opened its doors in 2013. With the boom of disc golf in recent years, though, the company has struggled to keep up with consumer demand.

Kastaplast will remain headquartered in Stockholm. As the year progresses, production will move to the Latitude 64 factory in Skellefteå, a nine-hour drive north along the Baltic coast.

You already know all of this; there’s nothing new here.

DGPT: Emerson Keith

What’s of particular interest, however, is what this new partnership means for one of the most fiercely passionate sub-cultures within the sport of disc golf – fanatics of the Kastaplast Berg.

My take on the matter?

It’s time for the Kastaplast Berg to put up or shut up.

Proponents of the cereal bowl-shaped approach putter argue the disc’s superiority as follows:

  • The Berg’s insane flight numbers are surprisingly accurate: 1|1|0|2
  • The Berg feels incredible in the hand – there’s no flashing whatsoever.
  • The Berg goes as far as you tell it to, falls out of the sky and sticks by the basket.

All of that may very well be true …

I honestly don’t know.

You see, I’ve spent more time rolling my eyes at the Berg’s cult-like following than I have actually working with the disc. In fact, I’ve never thrown one. Heck, I’ve never even held one. But with Latitude 64 a member of the Trilogy brands lineup, you know who can throw them?

Full-blown members of Team Latitude 64, Westside Discs and Dynamic Discs:

  • Matt Orum
  • Kona Panis
  • Kristin Tattar
  • Emerson Keith
  • Ricky Wysocki

That’s a rock-solid focus group, if ever I’ve seen one.

I’m no touring professional, but something tells me if the Berg is really all the underground hype’s made it out to be, you’re going to see way more than the likes of Eric Oakley and Scott Stokely (unintentional rhyme) bagging it during the 2022 season – it’ll catch on quickly.

And if it’s not, you’ll see Sinuses, Harps and whatever “Pig equivalent” DD makes for Rick.

Is the Berg a bonafide, “baggable” putter or a mere novelty for hipster disc golfers?

Phenomenal or fraudulent, time will soon tell.
