Disc golf: There’s something about white putters …

I love white putters.

Blame it on Wimbledon:

  • They’re crisp.
  • They’re clean.
  • They’re classy.

I don’t exclusively bag them, but always have at least one on me …

And you should, too.

For me, the appeal of the white putter hearkens back to the glory days of professional disc golf. For the better part of his career, Ken Climo putted with white KC Pro Aviars. And not because he wanted to, but because that’s what was readily available. In fact, if you were to go through his over-the-shoulder bag in the mid-90s, most of his DX and Pro stuff would’ve been white.

To opt for the white putter is to pay homage to the greats of yesteryear. Sure, Climo’s awesome and all, but don’t forget about guys like Cam Todd, Steve Rico, Ron Russell, Barry Shultz and Brian Schweberger. Products of the same era of the sport, white was what they went with.

Another selling point?

White putters wear battle scars.

You see this in other sports, too. With great pride, a hockey player waits until the end of the season to have a missing tooth replaced. And in MMA, boxing and wrestling, it’s considered a badge of honor to rock cauliflower ear until the ticking, puss-filled time-bomb oozes blood.

The Latitude 64 Ruby: The Flight Plate

Generally composed of a more baseline polymer, white putters dent, ding and demolish – and easily. And when those scratches and scrapes are exposed, they fill with dirt and grime. They feel good on fingers, but the wounds look even cooler. They’ve seen the battlefield …

And they’re still standing.

Lastly, there’s a strategic component to this obsession of mine …

White putters do little to distract the mind when there’s a short drive, upshot or putt that demands perfection. And if you think this is merely me belching words onto a screen, take a look at Simon Lizotte’s pair of Electron Anodes the next time he steps up to a C1X putt. Not only are they white, he’s wiped the stamps, as well. He requires a clear head; white putters help with it.

His words – not mine:

“I wiped the stamp, just cause that’s for some reason what I like. I don’t like lining up my putt and looking at the stamp or seeing that in the corner of my eye. It distracts me for some embarrassing reason. But here we go: Anodes are going to be my go-to putters.”

No, white putters aren’t a make-or-break thing for me …

But when given the option, I go white every time.

And I don’t plan on switching things up.

  1. Wipe the stamp??!! Unheard of. I would never. Classic Soft Burst Wardens are too sharp to go and do that to them.

    • Hey, I don’t do it, myself …

Bring it up with Simon. Haha.

Also, he says he wiped them, but I could also see MVP just sending him some blanks, if that’s what he wanted …

Well within the realm of possibility.

      • I use a white prodiscus Sparta in base plastic. Has seen thousands of putts and looks like hell. But that’s the mojo that has soaked into it lol. It’s like an old war buddy that you can sit around and reminisce “hey you remember that time we made that hundred footer”. Wouldn’t trade it for anything

  2. I use a white putter only because I play in the winter in Canada and if you throw a white midrange good luck finding that in the snow!

  3. My current putter set is white, but they may as well be grey after six months of use… they’re at the point where a magic eraser can’t even get them clean.

  5. Funny thing, I never look at my putters while putting. If I’m practicing with three, I don’t even see which color I grabbed until it’s in flight.

Of course, Simon is miles better than me at putting. Maybe I should look…
