Disc golf: The ‘What the f*ck, Richard?’ video is overrated

In the age of social media, video clips often take on lives of their own …

The “What the f*ck, Richard?” video (click here) is one of those clips.

With over a decade of clicks under its digital belt, the viddie’s amassed nearly nine million views. The most impressive part? All Dick needed was seven seconds to make it happen. Even Daniel Tosh featured the guy’s mug during an episode of Comedy Central’s “Tosh.0” years back.

Comedic gold, right?

Eh …

Maybe?

For starters, let me first address what the clip has going for it …

It’s smile-inducing; it’s chuckle-worthy.

And above all else, it’s relatable. No matter how long you’ve been slinging plastic, you know what it’s like to round so badly, the (literal) lives of fellow park-goers are in grave danger.

Furthermore, the way Richard’s buddy delivers the video’s lone line is off-the-charts good. The emphasis he places on the F-bomb makes it feel like Dick’s no stranger to screwing up. The fact that it’s on camera (and now the internet) couldn’t have done much for his confidence levels. You don’t know Richard. You don’t know his buddy, either. After this, you feel like you do.

That’s art.

Lastly, a car almost gets drilled …

That’s never a bad thing.

Clearly, the clip has plenty going for it.

Here’s where it loses me, though …

If you disc golf with ANY kind frequency, this happens – a lot. Especially if you’re bringing a buddy out for an introductory go at the game, these head-seeking, missile-type shanks aren’t all that uncommon. And when a disc gets grip-locked beyond belief, the initial response is often …

Profanity.

And from everybody in attendance:

  • Golfers.
  • Cardmates.
  • Women and children.
  • The nearly decapitated.

And I hate to bring it up again, but the white van did NOT get beaned. A well-timed “thud” and a fuming driver slamming on his brakes are what this clip is missing. I wouldn’t make this kind of demand if I hadn’t seen this exact scenario play out to varying degrees during my D.G. lifetime.

My takeaway?

If you don’t disc golf, this is wildly hilarious. If you do disc golf, it’s mildly amusing – and that’s about it. Give me Gregg Barsby and the “Iron Leaf” video over this ANY day of the week …

I’ve said what I’ve said; I apologize for nothing.
