Foundation Disc Golf launches a Creator Academy (and people go ape)

Somebody explain the problem with this to me like I’m a five-year-old …

Or Michael Scott.

Because I have ZERO idea what’s induced the mass hysteria within the disc golf community.

Late last week, Foundation Disc Golf announced the launch of the Foundation Disc Golf Creator Academy. If you missed it, here’s the post that summoned the world’s smallest violin for many:

Basically, with five years of content-creation experience under its belt, for the benefit of its audience, Foundation Disc Golf intends to open up the playbook a bit. Led by Hunter Thomas and Trevor Staub, Foundation plans to teach participants how to create better content, increase their reach and monetize their stuff – and quickly: ads, products, affiliate partnerships, etc.

This’ll work for guys (and gals) looking to upload videos to their YouTube channels on the weekends – and nothing more. It’ll be great for people interested in pocketing some side-hustle coin in the coming year. And, for a select few, it could well lead to a full-time, nine-to-five gig.

All this within the disc-golf niche, of course.

Here are the nitty-gritty details:

  • The Creator Academy will be a year-long course for all students.
  • It will consist of a 30- to 60-minute instructional session each month.
  • All attendees will have access to a course-specific Discord server, as well.

This isn’t community college, however …

Not everybody gets in.

Best of luck.

But again, I have to ask …

What exactly about this offer instantaneously bundles undies? The following are a few unfiltered samples of the inexplicable backlash disc golf Twitter (X) vomited into the comments section of Hunter’s launch tweet. Clearly, the cost of the Creator Academy proved problematic:

X: @MalatekAllen

If one penny-pinching naysayer wasn’t enough, here’s another:

X: @greekdiscus

And yet again, back to throw a THIRD haymaker is Jim Cramer’s burner:

X: @Lionheart_Live

Here’s the problem …

It’s free.

Of course, to know this, you’d have to have sat through 90 seconds (gasp) of content, instead of merely seeing the “Foundation Disc Golf” name and putting the entire company on blast mode.

I’m a Foundation guy. I enjoy what the dudes do for disc golf; I find it entertaining. That’s not to say every video they put out is perfect. For example, I could’ve done without the whole “Throw Everything” series, but hey – you can’t win ‘em all. By and large, though, I’m an avid fan.

I’m not applying to take part in the Creator Academy. And to the best of my knowledge, nobody else at Green Splatter is, either. But countless disc golfers would voluntarily offer up a kidney to make a career out of the game, even if that doesn’t include taking part in Pro Tour action.

As a content creator myself, allow me to drop a nugget of wisdom:

  • Find a person who’s doing what you want to do.
  • Ask them as many questions as possible.
  • Follow their counsel like a madman.

It’s the fastest, most proven method for success.

Foundation is offering that.

And for free.

FREE

Foundation Disc Golf: Hunter Thomas + Trevor Staub

Even if there’s a layer of corporate self-interest hidden somewhere beneath Foundation’s Creator Academy, to bash on somebody’s willingness to help further your dream career is like spitting in a person’s face after they offer to help you move out of your old apartment. The wacko response says more about the brain cells of the people who flipped shiz than it does “disc golf bros.”

Go the content game alone, if you must …

That YouTube channel of yours will (likely) be buried in a half-inch of dust within 30 days.

If you’re not interested in the offer, that’s fine – even understandable. But don’t go out of your way to try and ruin it for those who’ve got the stones to do something different for a change.

Condescension isn’t a cute color on you.

Have anything to add? Take to X to let us know – we’ll actually (for real) get back to you.

  1. The people saying that stuff are all ready trolls and not fans of the channel. They have a lot of hate and anything they post is going to get some negative reaction. Even if they were charging I’ve never understood people being upset by it. Either buy it or don’t. But it’s hilarious it’s free and getting to see people get up in arms without knowing ANYTHING that was said.
