Review: The Innova Wombat3

Looking to have more fun?

Throw understable midranges.

They’re a hoot.

Because of it, I’ll review the Rollo shortly. But before the Rollo was ever a flippy midrange disc golfers thought about, the Innova Wombat3 existed. Well, the Wombat existed, and then – for some inexplicable reason – Dave Dunipace felt it worthy to receive the “three treatment.”

The Innova Wombat3: The Flight Plate

A few months back, Disc Golf United (Innova East) sent me a Star Wombat3 to tinker with. And I’m glad they did, because – as you would’ve guessed – I had a blast tossing this thing around.

Maybe you will, too.

The feel of the Wombat3

I’ll just come out and say it …

The feel of the Wombat3 is NOT for everyone.

That’s largely for two reasons:

  • The Wombat3 has the biggest bead I’ve ever seen on a golf disc.
  • The Wombat3 is a frisbee that has a larger-than-normal diameter.

Neither of these things bothers me.

The Innova Wombat3: The Bead

For starters, I like big-beaded discs, especially when they’re of the slower-flying variety. To account for the bead, when thrown on a backhand, instead of firmly hooking my index finger inside the rim or fanning it out along the outside of it, I split the difference with this maneuver:

The Innova Wombat3: The Modified Fan Grip

The oversized bead gives me something to grip.

Next, it’s true – this is a big-diameter disc. But don’t think this is Condor-level big or anything. For example, the Roc3 has a diameter of 21.70 centimeters. The diameter of the Wombat3 is 21.8 centimeters. That might not seem like a big difference, but in your hand, you’ll (likely) notice it. And when you put the Wombat3 in your bag alongside your other midranges, you’ll see it, too.

The Innova Wombat3: The Diameter (Wombat3, Left vs. Roc3, Right)

Again, not a big deal …

But you should know.

On the more universally beloved side of things, the Wombat3 I received in the mail is board-flat. I don’t know what it is, but flat frisbees give me more confidence – the Wombat3 follows suit.

The Innova Wombat3: The Profile

Lastly, I’d add that the Wombat3 I’ve thrown for the better part of two or three months is in Star plastic. Star plastic is a firm, durable polymer. This one started out slicker-feeling than most, but with regular use, turned into a normal-feeling disc. If yours is the same, just keep hucking it …

She’ll get there.

The flight of the Wombat3

WACKY

And that’s a good thing.

Here are the flight numbers: 5 (Speed) 6 (Glide) -1 (Turn) 0 (Fade)

These are accurate.

Here’s how the Wombat3 flies for its most famous disciple …

Double-G.

As you might’ve guessed, I’m NOT Garrett Gurthie. As such, I need more than a flat-footed standstill and a flick of the wrist to get the Wombat3 to dance in the air, but still …

She’ll move.

For a mere mortal such as myself, the good news is that the Wombat3 is a line-holder on two angles: the hyzer and anhyzer. Armed with 375-plus feet of power, however, I discovered releasing the disc flat didn’t result in a straight throw, but one that’d gradually drift right.

In and of itself, this is a useful shot. But because of it, the Wombat3 isn’t one of those “it’ll-hold-any-line-you-put-it-on” frisbees golfers rave about all the time on Reddit.

DGPT: Garrett Gurthie

If you’re thinking about nabbing a Wombat3 for straight-as-an-arrow shots, it’s the disc for the job. However, to achieve the flight, you’ll want to release it on the slightest of hyzers and with dialed-back power. She’ll pop, soar straight for a good bit and finish with a subtle hook.

Also, totally random, but the Wombat3 is great for hyzer-flip forehands. It didn’t work for me with a two-finger power grip, but with a split grip, it was easy to control and get to fly straight.

This is money in the woods.

For a slower arm speed, the Wombat3 has the potential to be a go-to, workhorse-type midrange. For most golfers, though, it’ll pair nicely with something with a touch more integrity like an Atlas, Lion or Roc3. Outside of the Innova lineup, think Trust, Truth, Buzzz, Compass, etc.

The aesthetic of the Wombat3

I mean …

This is a stock Star disc.

The good news?

The Innova Wombat3: The Stock Stamp (Star)

Mine’s Creamsicle orange.

There are certainly fancier, more sexy stock discs on the market, but there’s something to be said for simplicity. No, the Star Wombat3 isn’t winning any beauty pageants, but she’ll turn heads after working wonders in the air. The Roc3 is great, but the Wombat3 straight-up astonishes.

That’s attractive.

Did the Innova Wombat3 make my bag?

It didn’t.

But the understable midrange is both much-needed and oft-overlooked in the greater disc golf world. In my own setup, I use an old zipper-top Champion Classic Roc I paid WAY too much for during the pandemic on eBay. Inevitably, when she bites the dust, I’ll opt for the Wombat3.

So for now, there’s not much of a need in my bag. But one day, there’s a dang-good chance there will be. If your short game feels like it needs more agility, the Wombat3 is guaranteed to help.

  1. I saw the headline and knew i had to come in and request a review of the Rollo. You are way ahead of me. But a buddy let me throw his once this weekend. Just hucked it pretty flat at maybe 80%. Thing flew about 175 feet, gently fell right …. Right onto the edge and rolled dead straight for about 175 feet. I can’t roll so I’m in! Ok, wombat3….

Unfortunately, the Wombat3 has already found itself a new home …
