Why you’re addicted to disc golf memes

I’m not even going to define memes …

They’re popular enough. You know what they are.

In disc golf, PDGA Rodman made memes a thing. Given his mammoth success, an army of copycat, disc golf-themed accounts have popped up all over the social media landscape.

Some are good. Some hardcore suck.

One thing’s for certain, though …

Memes + Disc Golf = Staying Power

Here’s why …

They’re distracting

The world is (sometimes) a dark place.

And I’m not limiting this to the obvious stuff: war, poverty, genocide, addiction, etc. The weight of everyday responsibilities can be enough to break a person. And even if it wasn’t, all it takes is 10 minutes of Twitter use to give the most positive of people reason enough to crawl into a hole.

Memes put smiles on faces – and instantly.

For disc golfers, regardless of performance, the course has a way of doing something similar. But if you’re unable to break free from work or family for an hour or two, memes come in clutch.

They’re communal

Memes are language.

And here’s my favorite part …

Within the disc golf community, everybody speaks it.

YouTube videos take time to watch. Words on a smartphone screen can be laborious. Memes, however, are both easy to consume and digest – even the biggest of idiots can enjoy them. Better yet, adding to the sense of community, nobody’s stingy with them – sharing them is a pleasure.

There’s beauty in that.

They’re hilarious (and exclusive)

Memes are funny.

Groundbreaking stuff, I know.

Still, it’s the TYPE of humor that makes them so addictive.

Nobody likes to be on the outside of an inside joke – to have to have the humor behind something explained to them like a child. The exclusivity of disc golf memes to those who both play and follow the Pro Tour makes them that much for enticing – it’s nice to be “in the know.”

My brain doesn’t think in memes …

But I admire the heck out of those that do. These days, the ability to meme is an artform. And thankfully, it’s not one that can only be appreciated by welfare-backed hipsters in coffee shops.

Disc golf is fun.

But as a lifestyle, it’s better.

Memes help make that happen.
