Disc golf news: Calvin Heimburg grows the business side of his game

There’s not much Calvin Heimburg can’t do out on the disc golf course:

And perhaps best of all, he’s consistent – really consistent.

In fact, during the 2021 season, Heimburg played in 25 events. He finished top-10 in 19 of ‘em. Even more impressive, however, of those 19 top-10 finishes, not only were 17 of the top-five variety, but 13 of those were Pro Tour events, as well. Heimburg’s value is pretty simple …

If a big tourney’s going down, Vinny’s likely on lead card come the final round.

If you had to nitpick his game, though, perhaps the most pressing issue wouldn’t have anything to do with his play. Instead, it’d be the brand he’s building – or the lack thereof, you could say.

The afro that comes and goes as the season drags on is quirky. The goofy red sunglasses are a fun gag, as well. The man can even putt a Firebird like a basketball, which is one of disc golf’s better parlor tricks. JomezPro can’t get enough of it. And don’t act like you haven’t tried it at home …

But while other upper-echelon disc golfers either 1) left Innova or 2) signed top-dollar contracts with other companies this off-season, not much noise came out of “Camp Calvin.” And it makes sense – many of these high-end offers went to plastic-pushers with a sizable social presence.

If you know anything about Calvin, you know that’s not Calvin.

Well, at least it wasn’t …

On Thursday, Heimburg revealed a logo that’s to be associated with his disc golf brand:

Here’s what’s at least mildly funny about the whole thing, though – the logo was the result of a “logo contest” put on by Heimburg … In May. Of last year. Eight long, forgotten months ago.

Calvin’s seen how the tides of disc golf’s contract culture have turned. The eight-month hiatus without any kind of Instagram activity is over. As of the writing of this article, he’s posted 11 times in the past week. Don’t even try to tell me Kona Panis has nothing to do with this …

She absolutely does.

Heimburg’s also added to his sponsorship portfolio. Again, all of this within the past few days. Stateside, he’s partnered with discs retailer Flight Factory out of Pensacola, Fla. And in Canada, just yesterday, he announced he’ll work with Gander Disc Golf as part of their 2022 team.

Heimburg’s either jockeying for more contract leverage next off-season with Innova or he’s paving the path to a new manufacturer. Given his on-course talent, he’ll be worth every penny.
