The DGPT: Rock-solid C1X putting crowns champions

Consistent C1X putting leads to tourney takedowns.

This is hardly groundbreaking news.

But for as much obsessing as disc golfers do over distance, it might as well be.

This past weekend, on the FPO side, Hailey King won the 2023 Dynamic Discs Open in Emporia, Kansas. In and of itself, beating a healthy Kristin Tattar was impressive enough. The playoff park-job on 16 was cool, too. But perhaps the most impressive feat of the weekend from King’s corner came in the form of the C1X putting percentage she posted on Sunday

She didn’t miss.

DGPT: Hailey King

It wasn’t too shabby the other two days, either: 86% on Friday and 92% on Sunday. Naturally, it should come as no surprise she led the FPO division with 8.90 strokes gained via C1X putting.

All this got me thinking …

What C1X putting percentages have the last four Elite Series (or Elite+) winners tallied?

See for yourself …

  • The Dynamic Discs Open: Hailey King (92%) + Parker Welk (84%)
  • The Portland Open: Kristin Tattar (85%) + Adam Hammes (95%)
  • The OTB Open: Paige Pierce (80%) + Emerson Keith (92%)
  • Jonesboro: Kat Mertsch (82%) + Calvin Heimburg (90%)

If you’re not north of at least 80% in either division, you’ve got no business winning any kind of Pro Tour tournament. And on the MPO side, it’s even stricter: roughly 90% or better is vital.

Clearly, strong C1X putting is a MUST on the Pro Tour

DGPT: Gavin Babcock

But you know where it matters even more?

The amateur ranks.

Far too many weekend-warrior disc golfers think getting 400 feet off the tee is keeping them from the winner’s circle. Or, they see the likes of Gannon Buhr smashing chains from 123 feet and think that’s what their game’s missing. Technically, they’re right on both fronts: Big-time distance makes for shorter approaches. And when lacking in distance, long-range putts help.

But if you want to compete NOW with the athletic ability you have NOW

Hit your 22-footers.

I hate to kick her while her mental game’s in the garbage disposal, but watch this …

It’s offensive:

THIS is what somebody looks like when they can do virtually everything the game of disc golf requires of them to win – except for converting C1X putts consistently and confidently.

Eventually, Eveliina Salonen (fingers crossed) will get her C1X putts dialed-in.

In the meantime, let’s you and I do the same …

Make space in that wallet of yours for a Tour Card.

  1. How do you figure for Andrew Marwede though? Or Matt Bell? Or Gregg Barsby? All of those guys are rock solid C1x and smash big ones too. But I think they demonstrate that on the top of the tour, driving plays a huge part as well. But if i am not mistaken, you are talking about ams. And you are dead right.

    • Yeah, it’s weird, though …

Think about Ohn Scoggins: The woman can barely throw 350 feet, and she shreds.

Granted, there is a difference between the FPO and MPO fields …

And for what it’s worth, yes – this is largely directed at amateurs.

(so the likes of us – haha)
