Disc golf: 4 of the most ‘meh’ player logos on the Pro Tour

Disclaimer: I’m not a graphic designer.

Heck, I’m not even a creative person – writing doesn’t count. I can’t draw. I can’t sketch. Even my doodles are weak sauce. Dressing myself in the morning is about as good as I get with colors.

What I am, however, is an awful disc golfer with a buttload of opinions and a platform. Which is why when I saw this tweet, I couldn’t help but chime in with my thoughts on player logos …

Twitter: @hyzerhype

Given the above, take my opinion for what it’s worth – absolutely nothing.

Regardless, here it is – the most “meh” of ‘em all:

1. Missy Gannon

Missy Gannon’s logo is classy, but it’s a little too classy …

So classy, in fact, one could safely assume the creative direction for the logo was pulled straight from the pages of the guy who designed pretty much every major soccer club’s logo on earth. I’m not yanking your chain on this one, either – the circle with letters is BIG in fútbol:

  • Borussia Dortmund’s logo flirts with Missy’s.
  • Bolton Wanderer’s is pretty dang close, as well.
  • River Platte’s is identical – copyright infringement.

Should Missy assemble a legal team?

Again, it looks good, but so does every other one just like it – it lacks originality.

2. Chandler Frye

I couldn’t figure out who this logo belonged to on my own. Fortunately, a Green Splatter reader shot the blog’s Twitter account a DM with a picture of a tour series disc for “The Chanimal.”

The logo was on the disc – confirmed: Chandler Fry deserves the blame for this thing.

Remember playing with staples back in school? I’d unload a sleeve of ‘em just for the fun of it. After they’d spilled out onto my desk, I’d randomly rearrange the bent and broken ones …

Chandler’s logo looks like the end result of that.

3. Väinö Mäkelä

I don’t know what’s going on here …

The logo feels off-center – does it feel off-center to you? Also, there are letters there. I know there are letters there. And I know what letters they’re supposed to be, but I’m still lost

And that’s a shame: By itself, Väinö’s name already looks way cooler than everybody else’s. Getting a logo out of it shouldn’t have been too tough. There are four umlauts – ür öf ‘ëm!

4. Casey White

Hands down, Casey’s is the WORST of the lot – and it wasn’t even included in the above tweet.

Shield (pun intended) your eyes, if you must:

At least mom’s a fan, right?

Clip + Art = Clip Art

And finally, my three favorite logos …

A few of these logos were yummier than the others – here are my top three:

  • No. 3Nate Sexton: I just now noticed the silhouette of Nate putting.
  • No. 2Zach Melton: Without any letters, you know whose logo this is.
  • No. 1Chris Clemons: Ah, I get it now: Clemons. Lemons. Lemon.

Lemon wedge – nice.

I’ve had some fun with this thing, but in all seriousness: Kudos to these players for taking steps towards building a brand, as opposed to only playing disc golf. It’s hard to put yourself out there, especially when people are critical – I’m typing this while looking in a mirror, by the way …

As you see it, which logos are wildly underwhelming? Which of the lot impresses you most?

Let us know in the comments below or over on TwitterI’m on pins and needles.

  1. My 4 mehs:
Casey white (agree with reasons above)
Mason ford (not sure what is happening)
Drew Gibson (too much happening, I think that’s supposed to be a crown)
Heimburg (just a stretch overall, they tried a bit too hard there)

    My top 3:
Uli (shield incorporating Uli instead of initials is genius)
Hammes (that script is fancy AF)
Sexton (traditional initials with his silhouette is so well done)

As much as initials making your logo is overused, I still think found a way to make it unique. Shout out to the McBeast for starting the idea of branding yourself.

Also… Holly Finely logo is pretty fire for those that haven’t seen it.

    • Morgan, thanks so much for sharing your lists, brotha – love ’em!

Within your comment, these two things stood out to me most:

      1) You’re right about Vinny’s logo – it wreaks of trying WAY too hard.
      2) Glad we’re on the same page with Sexton’s logo: That silhouette is straight fire.

Thanks for reading – appreciate it, man 🙂

  2. So….I know you won’t bother writing a similar article about tournament logos, because…what’s the point. The Challenge at Goat Hill Park’s logo puts the rest to shame!

    • Allen, that’d make for a horrible article, because clearly, yes …

The Challenge at Goat Hill has the BEST tournament logo on the planet.

      End. Of. Discussion.
