Disc golf news: Here’s how the DGPT will calculate points in 2022

The Las Vegas Challenge starts on Thursday …

It’s the eleventh hour, but the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT) has finally announced how players will earn DGPT points during the 2022 season. Come the end of the year, if players have earned enough points, they’ll qualify for a spot at the DGPT Championship in October. And if they’ve earned more than enough, a much-needed bye could help them improve their DGPT title odds.

If you take nothing else (that’d be sad) from this article, remember this:

In 2022, for the first time ever, DGPT points can be nabbed at major championships.

Not only that, but the points offered at ‘em will be worth 1.5 times as much as a regular Elite Series event. Furthermore, the final two Elite Series events of the year will act as a type of “postseason” for the Pro Tour.

Held in September, the final two events are as follows:

  • Discraft’s Green Mountain Championship, Sept. 15-18
  • The MVP Open at Maple Hill, Sept. 22-25

Similar to what takes place in the NFL, NBA and MLB, golfers will need to actually qualify for a spot in these final two events. And there’s plenty of incentive to do so, as – in addition to reduced field sizes – points will be worth 1.25 times as much as other Elite Series events.

With respect to DGPT points, for the Green Mountain Championship, MPO players must be in the top 100 to qualify. For the FPO field, the top 50. And for the MVP Open, MPO players need to be in the top 64 to compete. And for FPO, the top 32.

More than ever before, disc golf fans

EVERY event matters. EVERY stroke counts.

* Note: Regional qualifying events will be held to ensure others have a chance to participate.

In summary, take a screenshot of this Pro Tour points breakdown – you’ll want it later on:

  • DGPT Silver Series events – 25%
  • DGPT Elite Series events – 100%
  • DGPT Major events – 150%
  • DGPT postseason – 125%

But what about the actual 2022 DGPT Championship, right?

DGPT: Missy Gannon

Similar to 2021, 32 MPO and 16 FPO golfers will take part. This year, however, 30 MPO and 14 FPO golfers will earn automatic bids. To fill the final two vacancies, the DGPT got creative …

In short, there will be a play-in tournament scheduled for the Wednesday before the start of the DGPT Championship. The first two MPO and FPO players left out of the automatic-entry fields of 30 and 14 golfers will participate. Four additional golfers in each division will play, as well.

These four spots are reserved for players who won a major or Elite Series event, but failed to qualify for an automatic bid. At this point, if a spot (or spots) is still available, an invitation (or invitations) will be extended to the next player (or players) in the Pro Tour points standings.

From there, let the chaos begin.

Remember when the PDGA National Tour was a thing? That was last season. This is year one of the Pro Tour. Jeff Spring and Joe Chargualaf have wasted no time getting their hands dirty …

The future of disc golf is fluid – try and keep up.

    • Allen, holy crescent rolls, that’s a really good point …

Are you saying that you feel the Green Mountain Championship and MVP Open (both located out east) get WAY too much love, with respect to points?

      If that’s what you’re saying, yeah …

That seems to be the case.

The only thing I can think is that the DGPT is trying to reward late-season performances, but man – you make a REALLY good point there …
