Disc golf news: Everything you need to know about the 2022 DGPT All-Star Weekend

Most major sports hold their all-star celebrations in the middle of the season or at the end of it. Disc golf’s a bit of a different beast. Because of it, our All-Star event actually kicks things off.

The 2022 Las Vegas Challenge will be the official start of the Disc Golf Pro Tour. But before a single golfer arrives in Henderson, the 2022 DGPT All-Star Weekend will be in the books.

In fact, it’ll already have been done for over a week-and-a-half.

So, if mind, body and spirit are jonesin’ for professional disc golf, you’re almost there. To make sure you don’t miss out on anything, though, bust out a pen and paper and jot down these details:

When is the 2022 DGPT All-Star Weekend happening?

The 2022 DGPT All-Star Weekend will take place from Feb. 11-13.

Where will the event be held?

Last year, the event was held at Fountain Hills in Arizona.

This year, the second iteration of the XC-tier tournament will take place at El Conquistador resort in Tucson, Ariz. Though the event will be held on a temporary course, the resort previously hosted the 2021 Arizona State Disc Golf Championships.

Speaking of the setup, said Jeff Spring, DGPT tour director and CEO:

“We are excited to bring the All-Star event to the Tucson, Ariz. area for 2022. We learned a lot from our inaugural event and are looking forward to building on that foundation to make this an event that fans look forward to for years to come. There’s no better way to kick off the 2022 season than by watching the top professionals battle it out in a showcase like All-Star Weekend.”

Who can participate?

Last year, eight MPO and FPO players made up the group of 16 disc golfers who took part in the 2021 DGPT All-Star Weekend. This year, 12 from each division will participate – 24 in total.

The top eight golfers in each division are determined by their total number of 2021 DGPT points. The final four MPO and FPO players qualify through a process that equally weighs these factors:

  • Their total 2021 DGPT points.
  • Their 2021 DGPT championship finish.
  • The number of fan votes they received in November.
  • A final vote conducted by national disc golf media members.

The complete MPO and FPO All-Star fields, as well as format specifics for the tournament, haven’t yet been released. The format will differ from what was done last year, when Paul McBeth and Kona Panis took down a heated combination of doubles and singles rounds.

All relevant details will be shared by the DGPT over the course of the next month.

It should be noted, however, that Paul McBeth has informed the DGPT that he won’t participate. Ricky Wysocki is seriously considering doing the same thing, as he dials in his new DD plastic:

Regardless of who decides to play and who passes on the opportunity, the DGPT has made it clear that any All-Stars who forgo tournament play will be replaced with alternate golfers.
