Here’s why Catrina Allen still hasn’t announced her new sponsor

Catrina Allen announced she’d be leaving Prodigy after nine years with the manufacturer on Dec. 30 of last year. It’s been roughly three weeks. She’s yet to announce her new sponsor.

With so much off-season movement having taken place during that stretch of time, many disc golf fans are left scratching their heads, wondering what the “plan” is over at Camp Catrina.

Well, if logic is any kind of compass, the delay’s for two specific reasons:

  • First, she’s still solidifying the financial details of her new contract.
  • And second, she’s building suspense with buyers, as it’ll help move plastic.

Next, let’s get something out of the way right off the bat: I don’t know where Allen’s headed.

Catrina Allen prepares to throw a shot.
DGPT: Catrina Allen

I strongly believe, however, that she does have her title sponsor nailed down. The Las Vegas Challenge is about a month away. She’s known for a long time. She’s dialing in her new discs.

Catrina Allen will get paid (one final time)

Choosing a sponsor is one thing …

Hammering through the dollars-and-cents stuff is yet another.

Think about it: Allen is a two-time World Champion. Moreover, it’s not like she claimed these titles five or ten years ago. The most recent came in June of last year – only seven months back.

Kona Panis and Kristin Tattar are zero-time World Champions. The first doesn’t have a rich history of winning tournaments. The latter does, but on an entirely different continent.

They’re both making $500,000 over the next four years.

A five-time World Champion, the details of Paige Pierce’s Discraft deal are largely unknown. Sports Illustrated did report that she made around $500,000 in 2020, though. That sum wasn’t paid out by Discraft. It was a combination of sponsorships, winnings and YouTube ad revenue.

Take all of that into account, and things get a bit messy …

Allen’s more successful than Panis and Tattar. She’s also 37 years old. This is likely her final FPO contract. On the other hand, she’s not Paige Pierce, but she’s her biggest stateside rival.

What do you pay somebody like that?

I have no idea, but Catrina’s wise to take her time getting what she deserves.

Catrina Allen knows how to sell discs

Remember when top-tier disc golfers like Matt Orum, Andrew Marwede, Kevin Jones, Ricky Wysocki, Hailey King and Chris Dickerson completely dominated off-season disc golf news?

Now, thanks to her silence, Catrina Allen is off-season disc golf news.

Her silence builds suspense.

The more suspense that builds, the more people talk about her. The more people talk about her, the greater the reveal. The greater the reveal, the more fans will rally around her when a new signature or Tour Series disc drops. The more fans rally, the more money Catrina makes …

Which brings us back to where we started: cold, hard cash.

Catrina’s been at this for a long time. Business-wise, she knows what she’s doing …

It’s working.
