Disc golf: This guy’s the best disc salesman on the planet

Content marketing.

It’s using content (duh) to push products and services.

  • Emails
  • Videos
  • Articles
  • Podcasts

Those sorts of things.

The idea is that prospective buyers will be more receptive to pitches if they’re hidden under the guise of learning or entertainment. I hate to break it to you, but “The Lego Movie” was essentially one 100-minute commercial without the audience even realizing it.

See what I mean?

It works.

DGPT: The 2024 Chess.com Invitational

If you’ve ever wondered why Trevor Staub and Hunter Thomas of Foundation Disc Golf can’t seem to keep the same 20-ish discs in their bags for longer than 15 minutes, it’s because – in addition to being disc golfers – they’re money-minded, growth-obsessed content marketers.

  • You see them throw a Buzzz.
  • You like what they did with it.
  • You pony up and buy one, too.

Switch out the frisbee.

Rinse and repeat.

This isn’t a knock on Foundation, by the way …

The Bogey Bros are great at what they do.

You won’t find a bigger fan of theirs than me.

But they’re NOT the best at it.

Instead, “best” is an adjective most appropriately reserved for Joseph Phillips of Another Round Disc Golf. Another Round is a brick-and-mortar disc golf retailer stationed in Charlotte, North Carolina. There are a few other locations sprinkled across the United States, as well.

Phillips is the co-owner.

Similar to what Foundation does with its YouTube channel and social media networks, Phillips documents his game with all sorts of golf discs. As is less the case with Foundation, however, Phillips’ approach to pushing frisbees is simple, straightforward and non-intimidating.

There’s very little fluff.

He usually films alone, though the occasional pro or his kid (Zeke) will sometimes join in on the fun. He’s also the king of the one-, two- or three-disc round to show viewers what a disc is really capable of when stretched to its max capacity – even on the putting green with bag-on, half-arsed putts that seem to annoyingly always go in. If you follow the channel, you’ve seen this before.

Still, no matter the shot, shape or line …

The disc is the star of the show.

Best of all, though, don’t let Phillips’ glasses, scraggly beard and dad-bod build fool you: Forehand or backhand, the man is as buttery smooth with a frisbee as they come. But in a humble, approachable, freakishly gifted-amateur kind of way, if that makes any sense.

Here’s a forehand ace with the Rollo

And with water carry, might I add:

And here’s the guy carving up a fairway with the Crave and Pitch:

See what I mean?

The Another Round YouTube channel is chock-full of this kind of stuff: Short, to-the-point, review-heavy content from a normal guy who’s actually capable of throwing a disc the way it was manufactured to be thrown. Also, he ace-hunts off every tee – and regularly connects, too.

Sometimes twice in a row.

I single-handedly credit my obsession with the Rollo to this man. And if I keep watching his videos at my current rate, though I don’t need it, there’s plenty more plastic in my future.

Ice to an eskimo.

The guy’s that good.

  1. Nobody throws a better Rollo than Joe but …

Funny story. I’m in Southern California. Met some parents at the kid’s school. Blah blah blah i mention disc golf. They say oh you should follow our old neighbor buddy Joseph Phillips on IG. He’s s really good dude who loves disc golf .

” Wait, What??? You know Joseph???”

    ” Ya, Why???”

  2. Oh man, watching Joseph putt drives me crazy. He’s able to casually toss in a putt I’d need plenty of time to probably doink off the rim or basket.

Love his content and will absolutely keep watching.

      • Alright, I was mulling it over more and there might be something to it, especially when he’s nailing the putts with whatever he teed off with. I like to overthink things (in disc golf and in life), but I had a buddy in school who basically had the motto of “You thought long, you thought wrong” or “First thought, best thought”. While I still question going at life like that, I will say, going at disc golf like that has a tendency to shrink my score, so maybe there’s something there.

I played a couple rounds over the weekend and my wife came with (trying to get a few more throws in before the baby bump gets too big/I promised a really good pizza place afterwards). I’d get in my head about what disc to throw for what shot, when, and she’d remind me I was overthinking it and just throw X disc. And wouldn’t you know it, I’d end up somewhere where I could be putting for birdie instead of scrambling for par/bogey. If I’m putting for par/bogey after her recommendation, that’s on me haha.

          Dude, great point!

Obviously, there’s nothing wrong with thinking things over.

Not only is that smart, but it’s half the fun of disc golf – choosing the right tool for the job.

But if you have to think for more than 15 seconds between two discs, you’re probably overthinking it.

It sounds like you married a smart lady 🙂

Congrats on the baby, BTW – always fun!

        • I think the subtly between discs is not as important as we all think. It’s more about how you throw it. Especially how much power, angle and spin. We all spend way too much time thinking about the disc when we should just grab the same disc and focus on the above.

But I’m also of the minimal disc club. 7, 9, 10 speed? Probably doesn’t matter, just throw it correctly for the shot needed!

  3. Yeah, Joe is all around Charlotte…it’s not uncommon for him to get caught up in business calls on the course. Thankfully, he and his camera are happy to let you pass.

    And…the guy is legitimately good.

    • That fact alone makes him okay in my book …

      Let the people play through.

Have you ever thrown a hole or two with him?

      Reply
      • No, I haven’t played with him before. I’ve only ever seen him playing by himself, so, other than “hello’s” and such, I try to leave him be.

I can’t remember if it’s been mentioned…but, the videos that are done with Koling, KJ, Aderhold etc., where they go in Joseph’s shop with a budget for buying, and playing, with used discs…I find those entertaining, and good advertisements for his shop. Clearly it doesn’t hurt that they’re playing courses I’m familiar with(always adds to the interest).

        • Yes, I’ve seen those!

          Love that content.

And probably best to let the man be – makes sense.

He’s not a “star” or anything, but I’m sure he gets plenty of attention.
