Somebody ‘new’ will win the 2022 Music City Open

Professional disc golf lacks parity.

There – I said it.

Reason out of your butt all you like that I’m nutso, but remember this: When an experienced, 1038-rated Drew Gibson won the Las Vegas Challenge to kick off the 2022 Disc Golf Pro Tour, it surprised just about everybody. Plain and simple, winning is (usually) for a select few golfers.

It wouldn’t take long for order to quickly be restored, however. Paul McBeth won WACO. And for the sixth time, Ricky Wysocki took down the Texas State Disc Golf Championship, as well.

Things are getting better, though …

Luke Humphries locked down second in Waco. Chris Clemons and Joel Freeman tied for third. To round out the podium in Tyler, Calvin Heimburg finishing one stroke back of Rick wasn’t anything new. But Gregg Barsby in third certainly was – so yeah, we’re getting there …

DGPT: Garrett Gurthie

Still, the most sure-fire way to immediately fix the problem?

Just get rid of the guys who win too much:

  • Paul McBeth
  • Ricky Wysocki
  • Eagle McMahon
  • Calvin Heimburg

It wasn’t intentional, but for one reason or another, none of the above are in attendance at the 2022 Music City Open. On the FPO side, the best take even more of a backseat in Nashville. Not one of the top-four golfers in the world are showing up at this weekend’s Silver Series event:

  • UDisc’s World No. 1 – Paige Pierce
  • UDisc’s World No. 2 – Catrina Allen
  • UDisc’s World No. 3 – Kristin Tattar
  • UDisc’s World No. 4 – Hailey King

If you’re a disc golf fan who’s grown super tired of the same six or seven men and four or five women owning the pro scene, the Music City Open is shaping up to be just what you need

With one round in the books, today’s lead FPO card will feature Missy Gannon (-5), Henna Blomroos (-3), Holly Finley (-1) and Kat Mertsch (-1). Yes, Gannon and Blomroos are more “household” FPO names, but again – they’re not regularly dominating tournaments …

DGPT: Holly Finley

It’d be refreshing to see any one of the above nab a “W” when this thing’s all wrapped up.

Something other than “The Cat & Paige Show,” if you know what I mean – and you do.

Today, for the men, Joel Freeman (-9), Garrett Gurthie (-7) and Nathan Queen (-7) will be on the lead card to kick things off after a stellar first round. Joel’s been everywhere this year. Garrett’s National Tour win in Santa Cruz was three years ago. And Nathan’s needing more than a one-off DGPT Championship to his name. There will always be a villain at these things, though …

Nashville’s no different: Native Tennessean Chris Dickerson (-8) is ALSO on lead card.

Apparently, Dickerson didn’t get the memo on sitting out this tourney. If he goes on to win, hands down, it’ll be the most “meh” of possible MPO results. This is especially true with the “Robot Chicken” only two short weeks removed from winning The Open at Belton like a boss …

Fingers crossed somebody “new” gets an early-season win this weekend to shake things up.

There won’t be many opportunities like this the rest of the season: Time to take advantage.
