I’m an obsessive-compulsive person – many writers are. I like my words written a certain way. I like them to read a certain way, too. Beyond blogging, I like things to work out just so …
I can’t help it.
For example, much like most disc golf fans, MPO or FPO, I pull for the underdog at just about every Pro Tour event. That said, inevitably, when one of the big-name golfers pulls through on Sunday, I’m rarely disappointed – there’s a sense of “wholeness” when the best guy wins …
Adrian Monk would be proud.
Fortunately, at major championships, the best golfer ALWAYS wins – maybe not the “big-name” golfer, but the best golfer. To clarify, I’m not talking about the best disc golfer in the world or anything: I’m referring to the specific major in question – the Champions Cup, for example.
Still, exceptions to the rule exist:
- Loophole No. 1 – Widespread, unfortunate injuries can weaken a field.
- Loophole No. 2 – Mother Nature might cut things short, as well.
- Loophole No. 3 – Personal issues arise from time to time.
- Loophole No. 4 – Untimely asteroids, of course.
There’s proof in this pudding: I’m a MASSIVE Gregg Barsby fan …

For as much as I love the Foundation Disc Golf guys, nothing has me pulling my hair out as much as Hunter and Trevor bashing on the guy’s 2018 takedown of the PDGA Disc Golf World Championships. Four years back, was “The People’s Champ” the best player in the world?
Hardly.
And if you were to ask him about it today, he’d say the same thing.
Here’s the kicker, though: Majors aren’t three-round events – they’re FOUR or FIVE.
An undeserving, eventual champion can luck into a hot round one or two times – maybe even three. Sometimes, they’ll have built up such a lead the first or second day of a tournament, that mediocre golf will get the job done the rest of the way – that’s not the case at a major.
Paul McBeth, James Conrad, Ricky Wysocki, Chris Dickerson, Calvin Heimburg and Eagle McMahon had 90 holes to catch and pass Barsby, but they simply couldn’t get it done …
There’s no stumbling into that kind of dominance – even if it’s only for one week.
In disc golf, at major championships, the best will always rise to the top …
Heck, the Champions Cup is immediate proof of this – remember when the likes of Corey Ellis and Casey White were leading the MPO pack on Thursday? It took just one more round for the “cream of the crop” to rise to the top: Wysocki, Dickerson, Heimburg, McBeth, Conrad, etc.
The best will win this weekend …
And whether it’s a “household” name or not, they’ll be deserving – it’s a beautiful thing.
